Many film productions and businesses have found that by measuring their carbon emissions they can identify ways to save money, as well as carbon.
Commissioned in 2010 and updated to DEFRA specifications annually, our carbon tools have calculated over 150 carbon footprints for filming productions of all sizes, as well as a wide variety of businesses.
We use the framework of the GHG Protocol1
to calculate. It was the first filming specific carbon calculator developed. (And subsequently expanded to cover all scoping relevant to businesses.) The developer in partnership with Greenshoot was Jane Burston of Carbon Retirement.
We assess direct and indirect emissions and have also found new innovative ways of calculating the film industries other lesser known areas like SFX, staff commutes, hotel accommodation and data storage.
Calculating a carbon footprint is a simple process consisting of collecting data: energy, travel, material use, procurement, waste. But the resulting savings in both carbon and finance can be significant.
